How To Avoid Foreclosure
Times are tough. More people than ever before are facing foreclosure and that is because the cost of goods is going up while more and more people are losing their jobs or working fewer hours as their employers need to cut back as well. The thought of losing your home is very scary but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. There are some things that you can do to avoid foreclosure. The key is not to just ignore the calls and the letters from your mortgage company.
Pay what you can
If you cannot pay your total monthly fee you need to pay what you can. For instance, if your mortgage payment is usually $700 but you only have $400 it’s better to pay the $400 than to not pay anything at all. Sure, it’s not the ideal situation but what it does is show your mortgage company that you have every intention to keep your home and repay the debt. Even if you can only pay one tenth of your payment it is better than nothing.
Talk to your mortgage company
If you are like most people you are intimidated by the very thought of calling your mortgage company and telling them you cannot currently make your payments or that you’ll have to make a payment or two late. While this may seem like a bad idea, it lets your mortgage company know that you are a responsible homeowner you have just hit hard times. Usually they will work with you to break up mortgage payments so that you can catch up without incurring unnecessary fees. The only way to know what your mortgage company is going to do is to call them. Chances are you will be pleasantly surprised with their response. It is important not to wait until they are ready to take your home, though. Call your mortgage company as soon as you know there is a problem as there are more options available to you earlier on.
Ask for help
Instead of allowing for one payment to pile on top of the next you need to be sure that you ask for help before it gets too hard. You may be able to work with your mortgage company to change your payments, your interest rates or even your due date to make it easier to make the payments. Sometimes the mortgage company will essentially start your mortgage over so that you can pay less per month, which is what many people need.
